Kia ora!

Adel came to New Zealand as one of the first quota refugee minors in 1989. He holds a BA in Education and linguistics; a Graduate Diploma in Teaching; and an MA (Hon) in Development Studies.

 

He has also completed and defended his portfolio for the Dr of Education on racism , race relations and education through arts based research.

 

Adel has worked as a teacher; in various Public Service roles and as a consultant in Aotearoa NZ; the Pacific and with Aboriginal Education in Australia.

 

As an artist Adel has exhibited his work both in Aotearoa and overseas and is a UNESCO RILA AFFILIATE REFUGEE ARTIST, through the University of Glasgow. He is the founder of arts-based initiatives of Prints for Good and Toi Rito: Arts for Human Rights and Social Action. Adel is a post graduate artist researcher from Toihaukura the Maori Art School.

 

In recent years He has been living in Tairawhiti and has completed contracts with the Human Rights Commission and the Ministry of Ethnic Communities and Health NZ. Adel is part of the Awhi App team, a tech startup as a Principal Advisor for Diversity and Community Engagement.

 

Adel is also a community activator in his neighbourhood of Kaiti with local NGO Te Ora Hou, where he uses Mara kai and Mahi Toi as community led development tools for engaging with rangatahi and Whanau.
